History

Avery House Montage
Avery House, built in 1996, is a mixture of undergrads, graduate students, RAs and faculty-in-residence. Founded under the ideals of Creativity, Integrity, and Tenacity, Avery House is intended to be an integrated community.

Located in the northeast quadrant of campus, Avery is relatively close to Moore, Watson, Broad, Beckman Institute, and Beckman Auditorium.

As you can see, Avery was built relatively recently; every day its residents work to shape its history as well as their own.

One of the best ways to learn about this history is by examining the artifacts of the past, or at least the webpages left from days gone by. Luckily, the internet archive kept a log of previous Avery pages.

A great deal of this history, especially past FiR and RA info, was aquired with the help of longtime Avery resident, graduate student and household name Geoff "the" Hom.

In 2005-2006, Avery had Freshmen for the first time. It will be up to the future to determine how that will change Avery's history.

Portals to the Past

Much of Avery's history has been collected and written up by The History Committee; this information can be found in the pages below. In the near future, the committee hopes to expand this selection of pages to create a truly comprehensive online history of the House.

The Grand Compendium of Council Documents

From 1996 to 2006, Avery was governed by a Council. Ten years of governing has left us a fairly large paper trail. Minutes from Council meetings, lists of Council members, and opinions of the Council on various matters, including Freshmen in Avery, can be found here.

Past Newspaper Articles

One of the best ways to learn about Avery history is to read through old newspaper articles about it. Newspaper articles don't tell the full story, but they do a good job chronicling the more important events in the House's short but exciting history.

Past Officers of Avery House

This page chronicles the succession of House officers from 1996 to the present. Like any other House, our officers put a lot of work into Avery and inevitably shape its history. Likewise, changes in the House itself have an effect on the officers and offices chosen.

The Old Avery Website and The Old Council Website

Much interesting information can be found by browsing old House websites. This site, the precursor to the current Avery website, was created sometime in 2004-05. Previous websites, or parts thereof, can be found with the internet archive.

(Coming Soon!) The Hall of Flame: A History of the Avery Mailing Lists

Since Avery was built after e-mail was commonplace, we have a complete record of House e-mails all the way back to 1996. This page documents the development of the House mailing list, interesting mailing list statistics, and the epic flame wars of old.

(Coming Soon!) The Constitutional History of Avery House

Aside from their legal importance, constitutions are a sign of the times, and constitutional changes are a sign that times are changing. This page documents the evolution of the Avery Constitution from 1996 to the present.
